Neuralink, the brain implant start-up founded by Elon Musk, has announced that it has received clearance from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to test its brain implants in human subjects. The company said this was a significant first step for its technology, which aims to create a direct interface between the human brain and computers. The implants are intended to facilitate communication between the brain and external devices, with the ultimate aim of restoring full body functionality to people with neurological conditions through the fusion of minds and machines. Earlier presentations by Neuralink showed the technology successfully embedded in monkeys and pigs, enabling them to play basic video games through their implants. Although the start-up is yet to open recruitment for a clinical trial in humans, the technology has the potential to treat neurological diseases, restore vision and movement in people with paralysis, and eventually enable telepathy and the uploading of memories for later reference. Researchers at Australian company Synchron have also implanted the first human brain-machine interface in the US.
