The era has come to a close.
Netflix is concluding its 25-year-long practice of sending DVDs in little red envelopes. The final batch will be mailed on September 29.
In a surprising move, the streaming giant has announced that subscribers can keep any DVDs they never returned, free of charge.
DVD Netflix posted on its X account: “We are not charging for any unreturned discs after 9/29. Please enjoy your final shipments for as long as you like.”
Sending DVDs straight to people’s homes played a pivotal role in Netflix’s success, as it allowed consumers to shift away from physical stores like Blockbuster and enjoy movies and TV shows in the comfort of their own homes in the early 2000s.
Netflix expressed their gratitude for the iconic red envelopes and their impact on changing the way people consume entertainment. They highlighted the element of choice and control that direct-to-consumer entertainment offered, including the vast selection of titles and the ability to binge-watch entire series.
Before the DVD shipment program officially ends, Netflix DVD enthusiasts have the chance to claim up to 10 random DVDs for free to be delivered to their homes. This offer serves as a final promotional gesture. DVD Netflix’s X account provides more details.
In a statement back in April, Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos shared his sentiments about bringing the program to a close: “We feel so privileged to have been able to share movie nights with our DVD members for so long, so proud of what our employees achieved, and excited to continue pleasing entertainment fans for many more decades to come.”
To all those who added a DVD to their queue or eagerly awaited the arrival of a red envelope, thank you.
