Netflix Promotes $900K AI Position Amidst Actor and Writer Strikes

In a groundbreaking move, actors and writers are currently on strike for the first time since 1960. Amidst this, Netflix has posted a remarkable job listing that has caught everyone’s attention. The company is offering a salary of up to $900,000 for a job related to artificial intelligence (AI) that aims to enhance the capabilities of their machine learning platform, as reported by The Guardian. Additionally, Netflix is also willing to pay up to $650,000 for an AI director at their gaming studio.

The use of AI has become a focal point for the unions involved in the strike. SAG-AFTRA chief negotiator, Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, revealed that studios have put forward a proposal that involves scanning background actors in exchange for a single day’s pay, allowing the companies to possess and use their likeness indefinitely, without any consent or compensation.

The union highlights that an astounding 87% of its actors earn less than $26,000 per year. It remains unclear whether the $900,000 AI job at Netflix will involve content creation, according to Mashable. Currently, Netflix utilizes AI to generate personalized recommendations for its customers, among other applications. The streaming giant even employed AI to generate backgrounds for their anime short, “The Dog and the Boy.” Furthermore, AI plays a vital role in the Spanish reality series, “Deep Fake Love,” where people are shown deepfaked videos of their partners cheating on them.

Actor Rob Delaney, who appeared in a thought-provoking episode of “Black Mirror” that depicted an actress battling a studio using her image against her will, expressed his disdain towards the exorbitant salary for an AI role, especially considering the struggles faced by numerous actors. Delaney described it as “ghoulish.”

Disney, along with other studios, is also actively hiring for AI positions. The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, which represents the studios and streaming services, has stated its willingness to meet union demands for informed consent and fair compensation when an actor’s likeness is recreated by AI. However, there is expected to be disagreements concerning the precise definition of “informed consent” and “fair compensation,” as noted by Mashable.

It is evident that Netflix’s job listing for an AI-related role has sparked interest and raised questions amidst the ongoing strike. The outcome of these negotiations will play a crucial role in shaping the future of AI in the entertainment industry.
