Neopets CEO Dominic Law recently spoke at the gamescom Asia event in Singapore, where he discussed his plans to revitalize the popular virtual pet website. Law, who took over Neopets in July, has been on a mission to reconnect with former players and attract new ones to the game.

Law shared his personal experience of moving from Canada to Hong Kong as a child and how Neopets provided him with a way to stay in touch with his friends back home. He emphasized the importance of Neopets as a platform that transcends geographical boundaries and connects people.

With over 150 million registered users, Neopets was a phenomenon in the early years of the internet. However, Law acknowledged that the game has not evolved much in the past decade, partly due to poor management. His team is now working to restore and modernize the game’s features, including the minigames that have become unplayable with the discontinuation of Adobe Flash.

Law recognizes that Neopets may not be able to compete directly with the high-budget mobile and console games of today. However, he believes that Neopets’ unique selling point lies in its ability to offer a nostalgic experience that big game studios cannot replicate. The game’s brand awareness also gives it an advantage in terms of acquiring former players.

To ensure Neopets’ long-term financial stability, Law plans to expand the brand through licensing intellectual property and developing new games. He mentioned upcoming partnerships with Monopoly and Upper Deck, as well as the launch of a 3D simulator game called World of Neopets in 2024.

Law’s ultimate goal is to bring back as many players as possible and introduce the Neopets world to a new generation. With the reactivation campaign already showing promising results in terms of user engagement and revenue, Neopets is on track to regain its status as a beloved online community.
