Neonatal Nurse Found Guilty of Committing Homicide on 7 Infants

Neonatal nurse Lucy Letby has been convicted of the murder of seven babies under her care at an England hospital between June 2015 and June 2016, making her the most prolific child serial killer in modern British history. The Guardian reports that prosecutors described the killings of premature infants as “persistent, calculated, and cold-blooded.” Letby, 33, was also found guilty of seven counts of attempted murder involving six babies. Prosecutors revealed that Letby would attempt to kill babies again after unsuccessful initial attempts. One victim, a premature girl, was murdered after three previous failed attempts.

Among Letby’s victims was a boy who was just 24 hours old, and his twin sister who she attempted to kill the next day. Two brothers from a set of identical triplets were also killed within 24 hours of each other. Prosecutors stated that Letby employed various methods to kill the infants, including injecting them with air. Pascale Jones, a prosecutor with the Crown Prosecution Service, stated in a BBC interview, “In her hands, innocuous substances like air, milk, fluids—or medication like insulin—would become lethal. She perverted her learning and weaponized her craft to inflict harm, grief, and death. Time and again, she harmed babies in an environment that should have been safe for them and their families.”

The trial lasted for 10 months, with the jury spending over 110 hours deliberating the 22 charges against Letby, according to the Telegraph. While they found her not guilty on two counts of attempted murder, they were unable to reach verdicts on six others. Justice James Goss expressed his gratitude to the jury for their service in this distressing and upsetting case, as well as their careful deliberations. Goss announced that they would be released from ever being called for jury duty again. Investigations into other infant deaths at hospitals where Letby worked between 2012 and 2016 are ongoing, and additional charges and trials may follow. Letby is scheduled to be sentenced next week and is expected to become the third woman in Britain serving a life sentence with no chance of parole. (Read more United Kingdom stories.)
