July 12 (UPI) — Mail delivery has been temporarily suspended in a Texas neighborhood due to a dive-bombing hawk that is targeting postal workers and residents.

Residents of Milam Place and Kenwood Avenue in the Travis Heights neighborhood of Austin have reported the need to constantly be aware of the sky in order to avoid being struck by the hawk. It has been causing quite a disturbance.

Alfred Del Barrio shared his experience with KTBC-TV, recounting how he thought someone had punched him on the back of his head while he was out for a run. It was the hawk attacking him. He has managed to dodge the hawk in the past by seeking shelter under his awning or getting into his car.

The U.S. Postal Service has announced that residents will have to collect their mail from the South Congress Post Office until the hawk situation is resolved. Safety is their top priority for both employees and customers.

According to wildlife biologist Blake Hendon from the Texas Department of Parks and Wildlife, the hawk is likely protecting its young. This time of year is when nests are constructed and eggs are laid, so the hawk is being particularly aggressive to ensure the safety of its offspring.

Hendon reassures residents that the hawk’s aggression will likely diminish once the young birds are old enough to fly, which typically takes around six to seven weeks.
