Neighbor Shooting Results in Indictment of Suspect in Cleveland, Texas

In a tragic incident in Cleveland, Texas, a man has been indicted on a capital murder charge, which could result in the death penalty. The accused, Francisco Oropeza, is alleged to have killed five of his neighbors. The motive behind the crime was complaints from some of the neighbors about gunfire disturbing a baby’s sleep.

Prosecutors have shared that they are yet to decide whether they will seek the death penalty for Oropeza, who is a Mexican national and had been deported multiple times previously. Speaking on this matter, San Jacinto County District Attorney Todd Dillon mentioned that it’s premature to make a definitive call at this stage.

Dillon anticipates Oropeza to plead not guilty during his court appearance scheduled for August. However, there has been no immediate response from Oropeza’s lawyer regarding this case.

According to the police, the crime unfolded on April 28 when Oropeza entered his neighbor’s house after they requested him to stop shooting his AR-style rifle due to a sleeping baby. It is heartbreaking to note that all five victims, including a 9-year-old boy, were from Honduras. This incident took place in the rural town of Cleveland, located approximately 45 miles north of Houston.

After the shooting, Oropeza managed to escape the neighborhood, leading to an extensive manhunt involving over 250 officers, drones, scent-tracking dogs, and a reward of $80,000. However, the search turned up empty for several days. Eventually, Oropeza was apprehended near Conroe, approximately 20 miles away from the crime scene.
