Necessitated by a Strike, I Must Sell My House

The ongoing actors’ strike in Hollywood has had a serious impact on actor Billy Porter. He recently revealed in an interview with London’s Evening Standard that he will have to sell his house because of it. Porter, known for his role in Pose, plans to join the picket lines when he returns to the US. He explained that he doesn’t know when he will be able to work again, stating that the life of an artist is still check-to-check until they make enough money. Unfortunately, he had projects lined up that are now on hold.

Porter addressed a studio executive’s comment from a Deadline article, where the executive mentioned starving out union members until they have to sell their apartments. He expressed his disappointment, stating that he has already been starved out. The Guardian points out that Porter believes streaming has disrupted the fair compensation system for artists through residual payments. He highlighted the lack of transparency in streaming companies’ viewership figures and emphasized the need for contracts to evolve along with the industry.

Porter also criticized Disney CEO Bob Iger for dismissing their demands for a living wage as unrealistic. He contrasted Iger’s $78,000 daily income with the struggles faced by union members. The Writers Guild of America strike, which began on May 2, recently reached its 100-day mark—the same length as the 2007-08 strike. Actors in the SAG-AFTRA union also went on strike on July 14. This is the first time both Hollywood writers and actors have been on strike simultaneously since 1960. (Read more actors strike stories.)
