Daryl Dela Cruz showcased his boxing skills by knocking down his opponent in the second round, cementing National Capital Region’s dominance at the 2023 Palarong Pambansa. The 18-year-old southpaw from El Tigre Boxing Gym in Mandaluyong City emerged victorious in the bantamweight division with a split decision win over the rangy Bienjemar Codoy of Central Visayas.
Del Cruz strategically targeted his opponent’s body to neutralize Codoy’s reach advantage. “I focused on hitting my opponent accurately to prevent him from using his longer reach,” said Dela Cruz in Filipino. Despite his success at Palarong Pambansa, Dela Cruz remains humble and acknowledges that more training and sacrifice are needed to achieve his dream of becoming a professional fighter.
Other weight division champions include Ian Carl Muyso (flyweight) and Zyvyr John Medecilo (minimum weight) from Region 12, Tyron Jay Quillosa (bantamweight) from Zamboanga, Christian Pador (light bantam) from Region 10, and Leo Mhar Lobrido (pinweight) from Western Visayas.
PALARONG PAMBANSA 2023 MEDAL TALLY
The National Capital Region dominated Palarong Pambansa once again, clinching a total of 85 gold medals, 74 silvers, and 55 bronzes. Western Visayas secured the second spot with 60 golds, 45 silvers, and 44 bronzes, while Calabarzon finished in third place with a tally of 52 golds, 52 silvers, and 57 bronzes.
