NC Republican Rep. Erin Paré vies for control of US House seat held by Democrats

North Carolina’s largest county has only one elected Republican legislator, and she is now aiming for a congressional seat currently held by a first-term Democrat who narrowly won in 2022. Rep. Erin Paré of Wake County made her intentions clear on Wednesday, announcing her candidacy for the 13th Congressional District, which encompasses parts of Raleigh and rapidly growing communities in the south and east.

With plans to redraw congressional districts ahead of the 2024 elections, the Republican majority in the General Assembly aims to create more favorable boundaries that could pose a challenge for Democratic Rep. Wiley Nickel in his bid for reelection next year. Nickel had defeated his Republican opponent in 2022 by a slim margin of 3 percentage points.

In her campaign announcement video, Paré presents herself as a formidable force that the far left fears, highlighting her identity as a conservative wife, mother, and business owner. Accompanied by images of protests and riots, she aims to position herself as a strong conservative voice. To kickstart her campaign, Paré has pledged $400,000 of her personal funds.

Paré, currently serving her second term in the House, played a significant role in pushing forward legislation that tightened restrictions on abortion and sponsored a bill prohibiting transgender girls from participating in girls’ sports teams in schools, both of which have now become laws.

As Nickel prepares for his reelection campaign, two other Republican candidates, Josh McConkey of Apex and Matt Shoemaker of Clayton, have also filed their candidacy paperwork for the 13th District seat, according to WRAL-TV. Presently, North Carolina’s congressional delegation consists of an equal number of Democrats and Republicans, with 14 members in total.
