Navy Discovers Implosion of Missing Titan Submarine Shortly After It Disappears, WSJ Reports

  • The Wall Street Journal reported that the Navy detected the implosion of the Titan submarine shortly after losing contact with it.
  • According to defense officials, the Navy started listening for the vessel as soon as it went missing.
  • An advanced detection system used by the Navy to locate enemy submarines picked up the sound of the implosion.

According to a report from The Wall Street Journal, senior officials in the US military had knowledge of the Titan submersible’s fate several days before it was made public.

The US Navy detected the sound of the Titan’s likely implosion shortly after it lost contact with its mothership during a deep-sea dive to the Titanic shipwreck, over two miles below the surface.

Unnamed defense officials informed The Journal that a highly classified acoustic detection system used by the Navy registered the implosion sound near the location where the debris was later found.

The Navy immediately initiated a search for the missing Titan by monitoring for any sounds associated with the submersible.

A senior US Navy official told The Journal, “The U.S. Navy conducted an analysis of acoustic data and detected an anomaly consistent with an implosion or explosion in the general vicinity of where the Titan submersible was operating when communications were lost. While not definitive, this information was immediately shared with the Incident Commander to assist with the ongoing search and rescue mission.”

Insider reached out to the Navy for comment but did not receive an immediate response.

Coast Guard officials confirmed that the Titan experienced a “catastrophic loss of the pressure chamber,” resulting in its implosion and the scattering of debris about 1,600 feet away from the famous shipwreck.
