Nationals’ Patrick Corbin outmaneuvers Mariners for series victory

The Seattle Mariners struggled with their swings against pitcher Patrick Corbin during their game on Wednesday at T-Mobile Park. Corbin’s slider proved to be particularly effective, as he struck out a season-high nine batters, five of them with his slider, over seven scoreless innings. Corbin’s strong performance led the Washington Nationals to a 4-1 victory, their fourth win in five games.

After struggling in the early part of June, the Nationals have turned things around on their current nine-game trip, winning four of their first six games. Corbin credited his success to his ability to utilize both sides of the plate and his command of his slider. He also praised the strong defensive play and his good rhythm with catcher Riley Adams.

The previous night, the Nationals relied heavily on their bullpen to secure a 7-4 victory in 11 innings. This meant that Corbin needed to deliver a lengthy outing, which he successfully achieved. He utilized his four-seam fastball inside the plate to set up his slider, generating nine swings and misses on the slider.

Corbin’s slider velocity in this game was three mph higher than his season average. In his first year with the Nationals in 2019, Corbin had a higher rate of swings and misses on his slider and used it more frequently as a put-away pitch. This season, hitters have been less likely to swing and miss on the slider, but Corbin’s slider still proved effective in this game.

Corbin started the game with a 3-0 lead thanks to four consecutive hits, allowing him to pitch with a comfortable lead. The Nationals continued to add runs in the sixth inning, despite a controversial play involving baserunner Keibert Ruiz. The home plate umpire called Ruiz out for leaving the base line, even though Ruiz managed to touch home plate before the tag. Manager Dave Martinez was ejected from the game while defending Ruiz.

Nevertheless, the Nationals secured a 4-0 lead with a double by Ildemaro Vargas. Corbin’s dominant performance, combined with solid relief pitching by Amos Willingham and Hunter Harvey, secured the victory and gave Corbin his fifth win of the season.

In other news, shortstop CJ Abrams did not play in the game due to a sore arm after being hit by a pitch. Manager Martinez reassured that it was nothing to be concerned about in the long term. Left-handed reliever Sean Doolittle was placed on the injured list at Class AAA Rochester, but the nature of his injury was unknown.
