National: Trudeau’s Cabinet Set to Address Housing and Economy in First Retreat Following Shuffle

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is convening his newly minted cabinet for a retreat in Prince Edward Island next week to discuss affordability, housing, and the economy. This retreat comes as Parliament is set to resume next month.

Trudeau shuffled his cabinet recently, with a focus on tackling ongoing inflation and prioritizing economic matters. Notably, Sean Fraser was appointed to the role of housing and infrastructure, signaling the government’s emphasis on housing issues.

Fraser aims to return the housing market to a state similar to his upbringing in small-town Nova Scotia, where having a job was sufficient to purchase a home.

The current focus on housing and affordability comes as the Conservatives continue to criticize the Liberals for the rising prices in the housing market, rent, and interest rates over the past years.

According to the Canadian Real Estate Association, the national average price of a home sold was $709,000 in June 2023, up from $455,000 in October 2015 when the Liberals first took office.

At the retreat, in addition to housing, the Prime Minister’s Office states that healthcare and climate change will be among the topics discussed. These are pressing issues for both the Trudeau government and Canadians facing long wait times for healthcare services.

The Liberals are also addressing Canada’s worst wildfire season while implementing new regulations to clean Canada’s electricity grid. This move is seen as crucial for Canada’s economic competitiveness, the transition to a cleaner energy economy, and the fight against climate change.

The retreat will take place from August 21st to 23rd, with the House of Commons expected to resume in mid-September.
