National retail sales surge as consumer spending remains resilient

According to Statistics Canada, retail sales in April increased by 1.1% to reach $65.9 billion. The growth was primarily driven by general merchandise retailers and food and beverage stores.

This result exceeded the agency’s initial estimate of a 0.2% increase.

In April, general merchandise retailers experienced a 3.3% increase in sales, while food and beverage retailers saw a gain of 1.5%.
