National reports: Johnny Depp pledges $1M defamation settlement to charities

Johnny Depp plans to donate the $1 million defamation settlement he received from his ex-wife Amber Heard to multiple charities, as reported by various sources. The funds will be split among five charities: the Make-A-Film Foundation, The Painted Turtle, Red Feather, Marlon Brando’s Tetiaroa Society charity, and the Amazonia Fund Alliance. Each charity will receive $200,000 from Depp. The settlement was reportedly paid by Heard’s insurance company. Heard has not publicly commented on this development, marking the end of their legal battles in the US and UK.

In June 2022, both Heard and Depp were found guilty of defamation by a seven-person jury in Virginia. Depp had initially sued Heard over a 2018 op-ed she wrote for the Washington Post, where she referred to herself as a “public figure representing domestic abuse.” The jury ruled in favor of Depp, awarding him $10 million in damages. Heard was awarded $2 million for one of her three countersuit claims.

In December, Depp and Heard reached a settlement, with Depp being paid $1 million. He committed to donating the settlement to charity. Heard stated that settling with Depp was a challenging decision and not an act of concession. She expressed her loss of faith in the American legal system and the impact the legal process had on her life.

Depp’s lawyers stated that the settlement would bring closure to a painful chapter for Depp, emphasizing his commitment to bringing the truth to light. Since the defamation lawsuit, Depp has appeared in the French-language film “Jeanne du Barry” as former King of France Louis XV. He attended a screening at the Cannes International Film Festival last month.

Heard now resides in Spain with her daughter after the Virginia defamation trial concluded. In a social media video, Heard shared her new life in Spain, expressing her love for the country and how she has moved on. She is set to attend the 69th Taormina Film Festival in Italy this month for her new movie “In The Fire,” where she plays a widowed American psychiatrist working with a child believed to be possessed by the devil. This film is her first since DC Studios released Zack Snyder’s Justice League in 2021.
