National reports James Cameron, the director of ‘Titanic,’ critiques Titan submarine as ‘inherently flawed’

James Cameron, renowned director of the highly successful film Titanic, has expressed criticism towards the engineering of the lost Titan submersible, describing its design as “fundamentally flawed.”

In an exclusive interview with ABC News, Cameron, who has designed his own submersibles capable of diving to depths three times greater than that of the Titanic site, stated that the vessel created by OceanGate Expedition should not have been constructed using carbon fiber.

Back in 2017, OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush defended the use of carbon fiber, emphasizing its advantages of being lighter, cheaper, and easier to transport, while still maintaining durability under pressure. Typically, submersibles are constructed using sturdy materials like titanium or steel to withstand extreme underwater pressure.

Cameron, 68, expressed that ever since Rush boasted about using carbon fiber in the submersible’s hull, members of the “small” deep-diving community had been raising concerns about safety flaws in the design of the Titan.

Several “very concerned” engineers and deep-sea divers wrote letters to OceanGate warning that the Titan was too experimental to carry human passengers, according to Cameron.

The Titan, which launched on Sunday and was reported missing 700 kilometers south of St. John’s, N.L., prompted an extensive search involving American and Canadian organizations.

On Thursday, debris was discovered on the ocean bed, and authorities confirmed the deaths of all five individuals on board the submersible
