National: Poilievre Reveals Conservative Party’s Recommendations for Leading Public Inquiry After Trudeau’s Announcement

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau should take the initiative and initiate a public inquiry before the Conservatives suggest potential candidates to lead it, according to Pierre Poilievre. In a letter to Intergovernmental Affairs Minister Dominic LeBlanc, Poilievre reiterated his demands after a recent phone call. Poilievre urged the prime minister to agree to an independent and public inquiry as a first step. David Johnston, whom Trudeau had appointed for the task, recently resigned due to the heavily partisan environment surrounding the issue. LeBlanc is now working on a plan for the next steps in investigating allegations of foreign meddling. LeBlanc has expressed the government’s interest in hearing from opposition leaders about the structure and leadership of a public inquiry. The Bloc Québécois has already submitted a list of potential candidates, including retired Supreme Court justice Louise Arbour. However, Poilievre stated that the Conservatives are prepared to present their ideas only once Trudeau commits to initiating a public inquiry. Mendicino, the Public Safety Minister, stated that the government’s main focus is to reach a consensus with the opposition. Johnston had recommended against a public inquiry in his recent report, citing the inability to disclose national security secrets publicly. Instead, he planned to hold public hearings over the summer to gather input from community leaders and government officials. NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh expressed the need for a public inquiry and stated that his House leader had spoken to LeBlanc about it. All parties agree that the integrity of the 2019 and 2021 federal elections was not compromised. However, opposition MPs believe that a public inquiry is necessary for Canadians to have confidence in the electoral system.
