National Outrage as Drew Barrymore Writers Stage Strike and Refuse to Return to Her Show

With the end of the Writers Guild of America strike, The Drew Barrymore Show is ready to return. However, Barrymore’s three head writers have chosen not to come back.

Despite the show announcing its Season 4 return on Oct. 16, the former Writers Guild members have declined the offers to return.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, which broke the news, co-head writers Cristina Kinon, Chelsea White, and Liz Koe were offered a chance to come back after the WGA strike ended on Sept. 27.

All three writers have been with The Drew Barrymore Show since its first season.

The reason for their decline has not been confirmed, but it is believed to be related to Barrymore rushing to resume production during the strike.

The show is now interviewing new candidates and will follow WGA standards.

Last month, Barrymore faced backlash when she announced the return of her talk show without the WGA writers who were still on strike.

This decision angered union members and supporters who questioned if Barrymore is a “scab” or will hire “scab writers” to replace the striking employees.

Kinon, White, and Koe were among the WGA members who picketed outside the CBS Broadcast Center in New York City during tapings of The Drew Barrymore Show.

At the time, the writers stated that they were not informed about the show resuming without them and found out through an audience ticket giveaway on social media.

During the strike, the writers held signs that said “Drew’s WGA crew” and “Do you like breaking strikes?”, referencing Barrymore’s role in the movie Scream.

Following the backlash, Barrymore issued an apology but insisted that her talk show would continue production. This led to even more fallout.

Amidst the public upset, several guests scheduled to appear on the show reportedly cancelled their slots in panic.

As part of the WGA strike, union members demanded better compensation, benefits, and job protection regarding the use of artificial intelligence or AI, among other things.

The Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) is still on strike.
