National Guard mobilized by Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey to aid in emergency shelters for migrant population

Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey has taken action to address the influx of migrants in the state. She has activated 250 members of the National Guard to provide essential services at emergency shelter hotels, as the current service providers are overwhelmed. In addition, Governor Healey’s administration will establish Regional Rapid Response Teams composed of state employees to oversee shelter sites.

The decision to activate the National Guard and create Rapid Response Teams follows Governor Healey’s declaration of a state of emergency due to the rising number of migrants arriving in Massachusetts from Texas.

“We’re facing a state of emergency in Massachusetts, and we need all available resources to meet this challenge and ensure that families have access to safe shelter and basic services,” said Governor Healey. “We are grateful to the brave men and women of the National Guard for stepping up to help us meet the needs of every family in emergency shelter, including food, transportation, medical care, and education.”

Currently, there are over 6,000 migrant families in emergency shelters across the state. The National Guard members will provide services at shelters without contracted service providers. Each member will be assigned to a specific shelter site and will be responsible for facilitating services provided by the state, local government, vendors, and community organizations. This includes assisting school districts with the enrollment of migrant children.

The Massachusetts National Guard’s role in responding to the housing crisis will expand to utilize their diverse and adaptable capabilities in emergency and domestic operations to assist those in need, according to Major General Gary Keefe, the Adjutant General for the Massachusetts National Guard.

Overall, Governor Healey’s activation of the National Guard and establishment of Rapid Response Teams demonstrate a proactive and comprehensive approach to addressing the challenges posed by the influx of migrants in Massachusetts.
