According to Statistics Canada, the country’s population has been growing at an unprecedented rate, with over 1 million people arriving in 2022. Canada’s population growth is not limited to specific provinces but rather spans across almost every province and territory, with the exception of the Northwest Territories. Furthermore, the number of Indigenous people in Canada is also increasing, with a 9.4% growth from 2016 to 2021, compared to 5.3% for the non-Indigenous population during the same period.
However, Canada’s population boom does present challenges. The increase in population can lead to housing shortages and underemployment issues for newcomers. The Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp. has warned about the housing crisis, highlighting the competition for limited rental homes and the added pressure of strong immigration levels.
