Canada has recently issued recalls for several energy drinks, including Prime Energy, which is part of YouTube stars Logan Paul and KSI’s Prime drink brand. The recall was officially announced by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) following a health risk assessment conducted by Health Canada.
Under Health Canada’s regulations, energy drinks are classified as supplemented foods and must adhere to certain guidelines. These guidelines state that energy drinks should not contain more than 180 milligrams of caffeine in a single-serve container and should include cautionary statements to protect sensitive populations, including children.
In addition to Prime Energy, five other brands have been impacted by the wider recall. These brands include 3D Alphaland, Celsius, GFuel, Sting, and 5 Hour Energy. Some of these products contain caffeine levels that exceed Canada’s limit, such as 200 milligrams in Prime Energy and 5 Hour Energy, and up to 300 milligrams in GFuel’s energy drinks.
It is worth noting that Prime’s separate product, Prime Hydration, which does not contain caffeine, remains on shelves and has not been recalled.
Global News reached out to Prime for comment on the recall but has not yet received a response. The CFIA has stated that the recall is due to non-compliances related to caffeine content and labeling requirements, particularly for products without bilingual labeling (English and French).
While no adverse reactions have been reported, the CFIA is working to ensure that the recalled products are taken off the market. Canadians are advised to report any energy drinks exceeding 180 milligrams of caffeine or the specific recalled products they come across as they should not be consumed or distributed in the country.
The CFIA takes appropriate actions when non-compliant products are identified, ranging from notifications and warnings to product recall and potential prosecution.
Overall, the recall of these energy drinks emphasizes the importance of adhering to caffeine guidelines and ensuring accurate labeling for the safety of consumers.
