National: Canada Indicates Possibility of Regulating Meta’s Threads Platform

Canada’s Heritage Minister has indicated that new social media platform Threads could potentially be regulated under a bill that requires Google and Meta to compensate publishers for using their content. Minister Pablo Rodriguez stated that Threads could be included in the Online News Act (Bill C-18) and that the government is currently examining the possibility. Since its launch last week, Threads has gained at least 100 million users. The bill, which received royal assent on June 22, has caused tension between the federal government and digital giants Google and Meta. Both companies have threatened to block access to news from Canadian publishers, while Rodriguez has remained firm in seeking compensation for the country’s journalism industry. In response, the government withdrew its $10 million annual advertising spend on Meta’s platforms, a move mirrored by several news and telecommunications businesses. Rodriguez has avoided applying the same treatment to Google, as he believes that the company’s concerns can be addressed through forthcoming regulations.
