The United States has issued a travel advisory urging all its citizens currently in Haiti to depart as soon as possible due to the “current security situation and infrastructure challenges.”
Americans are encouraged to use commercial or private transportation options to leave the country. The advisory mentions that multiple airlines and charter companies currently offer flights from both international airports in Port-au-Prince and Cap-Haitien.
The advisory, posted on the U.S. Embassy’s website in Haiti on Wednesday, states that “flights fill up quickly and seats may only be available several days or even weeks in advance of departure.”
It advises U.S. citizens in Port-au-Prince to closely monitor local news and only depart when it is deemed safe.
The embassy lists American Airlines, JetBlue, Spirit, Air Caraibe, and Sunrise Airways as among the available airlines serving the country.
U.S. citizens are also advised to exercise caution while traveling around the country, avoiding demonstrations and large gatherings. If they encounter a roadblock, they should seek a safe area. It is recommended to review guidance on travel to high-risk areas.
This advisory comes as Haiti continues to face security issues, with gangs now controlling large parts of the country. This has resulted in a humanitarian crisis, displacing tens of thousands of Haitians.
This is not the first time the U.S. has advised its citizens to leave Haiti, as both the U.S. and Canada issued similar warnings in late 2022.
Global News has reached out to Global Affairs Canada for any official warning and is awaiting a response.
Since last year, Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry has called for an international force to curb the power of these groups. However, no country has volunteered to lead such a force, despite the U.S. urging Canada to take a leading role.
In June, Canada and the Dominican Republic reached an agreement for Canada to coordinate assistance in Haiti by increasing staff at its embassies. This settled a public dispute over a proposed Canadian office in Dominican territory. Both countries acknowledged the need for enhanced international cooperation, as well as humanitarian and security assistance in Haiti.
Despite these actions, violence still persists in the country. Over the past weekend, hundreds of parishioners were encouraged to take up arms
