NASCAR driver Noah Gragson has been suspended indefinitely by NASCAR and Legacy Motor Club after he liked an insensitive meme featuring the photo of George Floyd, as reported by the AP. In response, Gragson took to Twitter to express his disappointment in himself, acknowledging his lack of attention and actions on social media. He recognized the severity of the situation and expressed his love and appreciation for everyone, stating that he tries to treat everyone equally. Gragson admitted his mistake and accepts responsibility for it. As a result of the suspension, Josh Berry will be replacing Gragson in the No. 42 Chevrolet for Sunday’s race at Michigan International Speedway.

NASCAR has confirmed that Gragson violated the member conduct of its rule book, but has not provided specific details. According to CNN, the meme Gragson liked mocked George Floyd, and TMZ has published an image of it. Legacy Motor Club released a statement expressing their disappointment in Gragson’s actions, stating that they do not align with the values of their team. Gragson, a 25-year-old driver from Las Vegas, is currently in his first full season in the Cup series and ranks 33rd in points. George Floyd, a Black man, tragically lost his life in 2020 after a white police officer knelt on his neck. His death sparked global protests and brought attention to issues of racial injustice. Following Floyd’s death, NASCAR banned the display of the Confederate flag at their events and venues, driven in part by Bubba Wallace, the sport’s only Black driver, who stated that there is no place for the flag in NASCAR.
