NASA reestablishes contact with Voyager 2 after accidental loss of communication

NASA has successfully regained full communication with Voyager 2, the interstellar deep space probe that was temporarily offline due to a faulty command. This positive development occurred much earlier than anticipated, as NASA experts originally estimated that a scheduled full-system reset would have to wait until October. Voyager 2, which was off course by 2%, was brought back into contact when a “shout” signal was successfully transmitted beyond 12.3 billion miles to the probe from NASA’s Deep Space Network facility in Canberra, Australia. Upon receiving the signal, Voyager 2 was instructed to reorient itself and point its antenna back towards Earth. The Jet Propulsion Lab at NASA made the announcement that they had reestablished complete communication with the Voyager 2 probe after the faulty command was sent.

NASA highlighted the time delay involved in the communication process, stating that it took 37 hours for mission controllers to confirm whether the command was successful due to the one-way light time of 18.5 hours for the command to reach Voyager. The program also mentioned that Voyager 2 began transmitting scientific and telemetry data just before 12:29 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time, indicating that it is functioning normally and remains on the expected trajectory. Voyager 2, along with its counterpart Voyager 1, was originally launched in 1977 with the purpose of studying our solar system’s outer gas giants. In 2018, Voyager 2 achieved a significant milestone by leaving the sun’s protective belt, known as the heliosphere, and entering interstellar space. Recently, the Jet Propulsion Lab has been reevaluating data from the 1980s collected by Voyager 2, which suggests the potential existence of life on several moons orbiting Uranus.
