Mutters of Age – An Opinion Piece from The Inquirer

How do you feel about the process of aging? I recently posed this question to individuals aged 55 and above, not only out of curiosity but with the intention of gathering valuable insights to help us prepare for the inevitable. While I anticipated hearing some cliché answers, I found that this simple exercise proved to be immensely enriching and reminded me that there is always room for learning and growth.

The ensuing conversations with my family and friends became the highlights of my week. Although they commenced on a serious note, as one would expect, they quickly took a lighthearted turn, inducing plenty of laughter. It was a welcome reprieve for those of us who tend to take life a bit too seriously.

I observed an interesting incident at the mall that further emphasized the topic. A security guard, diligently performing his duty to ensure smooth human traffic, was urging a female friend to move to the senior lane. However, she stubbornly refused, explaining that she still had a few months to go before reaching the qualifying age. This incident made me reflect on how we react when faced with similar situations that challenge our ingrained beliefs and identities.

In another instance, a friend jokingly declared, “I will wear the tightest clothes to show off whatever remains of my muscles!” This statement was met with laughter from all of us. It reminded me of how, in our younger years, we may have been sought after for our looks, and how statements like these stem from a desire to avoid feeling vulnerable or singled out.

We also spoke with someone who shared how they made a conscious effort to quickly stand up and sit down during Mass, as they associated struggling or failing to rise with old age. They didn’t want to draw attention to themselves or appear helpless. While all three of these stories highlight the difficulty in accepting the realization that youth is fleeting, they all agreed that the key to moving forward is embracing and accepting the changes that come with aging.

Aging itself is not a disease, but our bodies will inevitably undergo degenerative changes that can affect our functionality. Despite the advances in science and medicine, these changes are generally irreversible. Therefore, acceptance is crucial in navigating this phase of life successfully. With that in mind, let me share some wisdom from an octogenarian colleague who still actively practices medicine and constantly reminds us to enjoy the journey.

– Have a purpose and know your limitations, adapting as needed.
– Strive to stay physically and mentally active.
– Explore new hobbies and surround yourself with positive people.
– Let go of things that cannot be changed.
– Understand that problems are often self-fabricated and time will bring solutions.
– Embrace flexibility and be open to change.
– Avoid reacting impulsively and allow others to take charge.
– Practice gratitude, contentment, and prayer.
– Pay it forward and live a life of relevance.

Aging should not be seen as an enemy but rather as a friend. We can all contribute personal advice to this list, as each of us has unique experiences and perspectives. While aging may bring physical discomfort and occasional anxiety, let us focus on living in the present and appreciating the precious gift of life. Ultimately, we will all find ourselves at the departure gates of this world, some sooner than others. It is best to prepare and plan ahead.
