Musk Responds Firmly to Ocasio-Cortez’s Twitter Criticism

Elon Musk, the owner of Twitter, responded to criticism from Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) regarding the platform’s safety measures by cleverly referencing a famous line from William Shakespeare’s “Hamlet.”

On Tuesday, Twitter Safety claimed that more than 99 percent of the content seen by users and advertisers on the social media platform is “healthy.” They also stated that hate speech on Twitter only represents a very small fraction of the overall conversation.

In response to Twitter Safety’s claim, Ocasio-Cortez tweeted that she has experienced a significant amount of harassment on the platform. She argued that people are paying to give their own harassment more visibility and expressed her desire for the platform to be more usable.

Musk fired back at the lawmaker with a tweet stating, “Methinks somebody doth protest too much…”

According to Twitter Safety, they have partnered with Sprinklr, a unified customer experience management platform, to assess and reduce hate speech on the platform using artificial intelligence (AI). They claim that Sprinklr’s independent model shows that daily English-language hate speech impressions are even lower than Twitter’s own model represents. The estimate is that hate speech impressions are 30 percent lower on average compared to before Musk acquired Twitter.

Ocasio-Cortez has been vocal in her criticisms of the platform since Musk took over, including calling out his suspension of journalists from Twitter and accusing him of boosting a fake account impersonating her.

Shortly after Musk’s acquisition of Twitter, Ocasio-Cortez mocked a comparison between Twitter charging users a monthly fee and traditional media outlets’ subscription services. She also claimed her Twitter mentions and notifications were conveniently not working.

Musk has faced backlash for his controversial decisions since taking over Twitter, including changes to content moderation measures and the introduction of the Twitter Blue program, which charges users for account verification.
