A six-hour standoff between a gunman and law enforcement in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania came to an end with the death of the suspect, and several officers are now on leave.

The incident unfolded in the Garfield neighborhood on Wednesday morning after William Hardison Sr. was served an eviction notice and drew a weapon, according to the Allegheny Sheriff’s Department.

Following hours of shooting and evacuation orders, it was announced that many officers involved in the shootout have been placed on leave. William Hardison Jr., the suspect’s son, described his father as a good man who was going through a difficult time. Another witness wished for the opportunity to speak with him.

Residents in the vicinity were urged to evacuate during the shootout, as stated by the Pittsburgh Public Safety Twitter account.

Pittsburgh Police Chief Larry Scirotto estimated that “thousands” of shots were fired, but exact numbers have not been confirmed. The suspect was pronounced dead by 5:08 p.m.

According to ABC-affiliated station WTAE, numerous officers have been placed on leave due to their involvement in the stand-off. They will undergo evaluations before returning to work. The Allegheny County Police and Pittsburgh Police Department have confirmed officers on administrative leave. 47 officers from the Pittsburgh Police Department are on leave for the next few days.

Administrative leave is a common practice when officers are under investigation, as per the US Department of Justice guidelines.

The investigation is led by the Pennsylvania State Police, and neither they nor the Allegheny County Police provided additional comments.

The city of Pittsburgh has over 900 uniformed officers in its police department, as stated in the 2023 operating budget. The Allegheny County Police force consists of over 210 officers.
