Severe storms struck Michigan on Thursday night, resulting in heavy rains, strong winds, and a confirmed tornado. Tragically, five people have lost their lives due to the severe weather conditions.

Additionally, approximately 660,000 homes and businesses in Michigan and Ohio are without power as a result of the storms.

According to the Kent County Sheriff’s Office, a woman and two children were killed in a car crash during the storms. In Ingham County, two deaths have been reported.

The storm also claimed the life of an 84-year-old woman after a tree fell on her home in Lansing.

Additionally, there was a pileup accident involving more than 25 vehicles on Interstate 96 near Williamston, resulting in another fatality and several injuries.

The storm conditions caused multiple vehicles on the interstate to overturn, leaving some drivers trapped inside their vehicles.

Furthermore, the National Weather Service offices in Detroit and Grand Rapids confirmed the presence of an “extremely dangerous” tornado near Williamston.

The storms moved from southern Michigan to Ohio, posing the threat of powerful wind gusts, large hail, and possible tornadoes.

In the rural area of Ingham County, which mostly consists of farmland, homes and barns sustained damage from the severe weather.

Fortunately, everyone inside houses and buildings remained safe, although an assisted living center’s roof collapsed. Authorities will assess the damage during daylight hours.

The fatal crash in Kent County involved two vehicles, resulting in the death of a woman and two children, as well as a head injury to the driver.

The driver of the other vehicle also sustained injuries.

According to PowerOutage.us, over 460,000 people in Michigan and nearly 200,000 in Ohio are experiencing power outages due to the storms.

Detroit reported a powerful wind gust of 70 mph during the storm.

These storms occurred following an earlier round of heavy rainfall in southern Michigan and northern Ohio, which brought significant amounts of precipitation.

The initial downpours caused flight cancellations at the Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport and road closures due to flooding. However, the airport and roadways have since reopened.
