MTRCB Confirms Chair Lala Sotto’s Recusal from Ruling on ‘It’s Showtime’ Suspension

MTRCB Chairperson Lala Sotto-Antonio voluntarily abstained from voting on the suspension of “It’s Showtime” to ensure the independent judgment of the board members, according to the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board. In a statement released on Tuesday, September 5, the regulatory board reiterated its commitment to due process and fairness in fulfilling its regulatory mandate. The MTRCB stated that respondents in adjudication proceedings are afforded due process and granted their right to a fair trial. The suspension decision for “It’s Showtime” was reached during a special board meeting on August 17, 2023, and voted on unanimously during a regular board meeting on August 29, 2023. The board carefully considered prior warnings and offenses related to the show. Chairperson Lala Sotto’s abstention ensured that board members exercised their independent judgment to determine the appropriate course of action. It is worth noting that Sotto is the daughter of former Senate President Vicente “Tito” Sotto III, who is one of the hosts of TV5’s “EAT,” a direct competitor of “It’s Showtime.” The MTRCB emphasized that the producers of the noontime show have the right to file a motion for reconsideration (MR) and can further appeal to the Office of the President if they find the board’s decision on the MR unfavorable. The order suspending the show will only take effect if the respondents do not file their MRs or appeals within the specified periods. The MTRCB recently issued a decision to suspend ABS-CBN’s “It’s Showtime” for 12 airing days due to alleged indecent acts by hosts Vice Ganda and Ion Perez. ABS-CBN plans to file a motion for reconsideration as they contend that there was no violation of relevant laws.
