BEIJING — The U.S. House of Representatives Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party has expressed concerns about U.S. investments in approximately 50 blacklisted Chinese companies.
The committee recently wrote separate letters to MSCI and BlackRock, seeking more information about these firms’ facilitation of U.S. investments into the blacklisted companies, which are accused of supporting China’s military or alleged human rights abuses. The committee noted that this review did not include the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Entity List, suggesting that the actual number of investments could be much larger.
MSCI stated that it is reviewing the request for information and clarified that it does not “facilitate” investments in any country. It emphasized that its indexes measure the performance of equity markets and comply with all applicable U.S. laws. BlackRock, on the other hand, did not respond to CNBC’s request for comment.
