MPs urge Elon Musk to attend London meeting regarding Twitter acquisition

Elon Musk has compared Twitter to a bustling “town square” and made promises to restrict censorship, combat spam bots, and verify more user identities. In a letter sent to Mr. Musk last Friday, Julian Knight, the chair of the parliamentary Committee on Digital, Culture, Media, and Sport, expressed interest in Musk’s proposed acquisition of Twitter. Knight also highlighted the alignment of Musk’s plans with the committee’s own goals of promoting transparency and restoring public trust in digital platforms through measures such as user verification.

Knight referenced the committee’s previous reports on combating misinformation during the Covid pandemic and the UK’s Online Safety Bill, which emphasized the need for transparency regarding bots, automation, spam accounts, and the delicate balance between freedom of expression and tackling online exploitation and abuse. Knight extended an invitation to Musk to address the committee and delve deeper into his proposals. He also acknowledged Musk’s desire to have critics remain on Twitter, suggesting that the public forum could provide an opportunity for addressing any criticisms openly.

While the committee lacks the power to compel Musk to come to Britain, it has previously attempted, without success, to bring Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg to give evidence. Meanwhile, Musk recently announced that he will introduce fees for business and government users on Twitter.
