Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’ embattled presidential campaign has faced further setbacks, as it has confirmed the termination of one-third of its paid staff following weak national polling results. Approximately 38 individuals out of a 90-person payroll have been let go in an effort to streamline operations. In a statement to HuffPost, DeSantis’ campaign manager, Generra Peck, stated, “Following a thorough review of our organization, we have taken aggressive steps to streamline operations and position Ron DeSantis for success in the primary and to defeat Joe Biden.”
These staff cuts serve as the latest indication that DeSantis’ campaign for the Republican presidential nomination is struggling. Despite quickly depleting his financial resources, DeSantis remains far behind former President Donald Trump. A national survey by Monmouth University shows Trump leading with 55% support, while DeSantis trails at 35% when the entire GOP field is taken into account.
This lack of progress is concerning for a candidate who previously polled competitively against Trump and was expected to dominate as the more electable alternative. Instead, DeSantis is now competing against numerous rivals in different lanes such as anti-woke culture warriors, evangelical abortion opponents, and Trump antagonists.
Patrick Murray, director of the Monmouth University Polling Institute, stated in the polling results, “DeSantis has not made any headway. The arguments that he’d be a stronger candidate and a more effective president than Trump have both fallen flat.”
The Republican field as a whole has displayed little movement, with the exception of Vivek Ramaswamy solidifying his third-place position in the Monmouth survey. Additionally, rival campaigns anticipate a potential surge from South Carolina Senator Tim Scott in the months leading up to the first nominating contest.
To rebound, the DeSantis team plans to prioritize more intimate events instead of grand speeches, with less focus on Florida. They also intend to establish a better rapport with the national media going forward.
In an interview with CNN host Jake Tapper, DeSantis downplayed his campaign’s difficulties, attributing them to being viewed as a threat by the left and being attacked by Republicans aligned with other candidates. He emphasized that his campaign is not designed to cater to national polls but rather to the state-by-state process.
