Mounting atrocities and abuses leave no end in sight for Sudan’s unending civil war

Sudan’s ongoing civil war shows no signs of resolution. Conflict between Sudanese troops loyal to Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has resulted in widespread devastation, including civilian deaths, displacement, hunger, and lack of medical care. Burhan recently visited Egypt and is expected to stop in Saudi Arabia next. Ceasefires between Burhan’s forces and the RSF have been agreed upon and broken multiple times, and a lasting truce seems unlikely at the moment. The RSF leader, Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, proposed a 10-point program for peace, but it was rejected by Burhan. Both sides, along with affiliated proxy militias, have been accused of war crimes and looting. The RSF has been implicated in massacres of civilians and the systematic use of rape as a weapon of war. The Sudanese military is also responsible for atrocities, including indiscriminate shelling and attacks on population centers. The conditions on the ground are worsening, with millions facing food insecurity and lack of access to basic services. The international community has struggled to negotiate peace between Burhan and Hemedti, as various regional powers support different factions. Sudan’s short-lived civilian-led government failed to be inclusive and succumbed to economic pressures, leaving an opening for the military to seize control.
