My daughter and I have traveled together many times and if I’m going to business class, she’s not coming with me.

  • I enjoy flying in business class while leaving my kid in economy.
  • She gets to take advantage of my perks, like extra checked bags and lounge access, for free.
  • I receive a lot of judgment about my decision to fly separately from my kid, but I have no regrets.

When I choose to fly business class, I often face criticism for leaving my teenager in coach during international flights. Complete strangers have even gone so far as to call me a “bad mom” for my choice. However, I remain firm in my decision to prioritize my own comfort and convenience.

Despite the judgment I receive, I don’t let it affect me. I know that flying in a narrow seat in economy with hundreds of other passengers for a long-haul flight is not the experience I desire. I am not willing to spend extra money to upgrade my daughter’s ticket either.

My Decision, My Joy

Prior to takeoff, I always inform a member of the crew that my daughter, who is an experienced traveler, will be seated in the coach cabin while I enjoy the business class. I provide them with my seat number as well.

While waiting to board, I often notice other passengers listening in on my conversation with the crew, casting judgmental glances towards me while giving my daughter sympathetic looks. Some observers even shake their heads in disapproval. Nevertheless, I confidently continue down the aisle towards my business-class seat, eager to convert it into a comfortable bed and indulge in the premium dining experience that comes with the upgrade.

Sharing the Perks

Sometimes I’ll share parts of my business-class meal with my daughter.

Fortunately, I can share several business-class perks with my daughter without having to purchase two business-class tickets.

During a recent trip from Sydney to London with British Airways, we were able to bypass a long line of 100 people at the economy check-in desk. The business-class counter had no queue
