Members of Parliament observed a moment of silence in honor of the 15 individuals who tragically lost their lives in a collision between a semi-truck and a passenger bus on Highway 1 near Winnipeg.
After question period, the typically lively chamber fell into silence for approximately one minute.
The accident occurred at the intersection of Highway 1 and Highway 5 near Carberry. RCMP and emergency services from across the province responded to the scene, including STARS air ambulance services from Winnipeg and Regina.
The passenger bus was carrying primarily senior citizens, with a majority of them being residents of Dauphin, Manitoba, and the surrounding communities.
Authorities reported that 10 individuals were transported to the hospital, prompting Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg to initiate a code orange in preparation for an influx of patients.
During a meeting with Montreal Mayor Valerie Plante, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau expressed his condolences for the victims and acknowledged the reminder of past tragedies such as the Humboldt bus crash.
Trudeau stated, “I want to express my deepest sympathies and condolences to the people of Carberry, Manitoba, and to those who have lost loved ones. They are currently experiencing moments of tremendous anguish. My thoughts are also with the individuals who are hospitalized with injuries. I cannot fathom the pain these families are going through.”
