Aug. 14 (UPI) — Major League Baseball (MLB) is currently investigating social media posts regarding Wander Franco, the star shortstop who was sidelined by the Tampa Bay Rays during their game against the Cleveland Guardians.

While the Rays did not disclose the specifics of the social media content, several posts emerged over the weekend suggesting that Franco had engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a minor.

Franco took to Instagram Live on Sunday night to deny the allegations of being involved with a minor, stating that it was unfounded.

“During yesterday’s game, we were made aware of the circulating social media posts concerning Wander Franco,” stated the Rays in an official statement.

“We are treating this situation with utmost seriousness and are in close communication with MLB as they conduct their necessary investigations.”

Rays manager Kevin Cash acknowledged being “aware” of the situation and clarified that Franco was given a break for rest purposes.

The 22-year-old shortstop had played in 40 consecutive games for the Rays before Sunday, which also happened to be the night the team had planned a Wander Franco snapback hat promotion for fans aged 14 and under.

“I am aware of the speculation,” said Cash. “However, I will refrain from commenting further on that matter. The day off was simply due to the rest day.”

Franco, who made his All-Star debut this year, boasts impressive stats with a batting average of .281, a career-high of 17 home runs, 58 RBIs, and 30 stolen bases this season. The last time he was absent from play was on June 23, at which point Cash cited concerns about Franco’s ability to be the “best teammate” as the reason for his benching.

The Rays secured Franco with an 11-year, $182 million contract extension in 2021. With a current record of 71-49 this season, they currently hold the second spot in the American League East, trailing the Baltimore Orioles (73-45) by three games.

The Rays will face off against the San Francisco Giants (63-55) at 9:45 p.m. EDT on Monday in San Francisco.
