Mitchell & Ness, endorsed by Fanatics, appoints former Nike executive as CEO

Mitchell & Ness, a lifestyle clothing brand specializing in throwback and vintage jerseys and apparel, has appointed Eli Kumekpor, a former Nike executive, as its new CEO. Kumekpor, previously the global vice president and general manager of Jordan Brand’s men’s business, will replace former CEO Kevin Wulff, who is retiring after Mitchell & Ness was acquired by Fanatics last year.

Founded in 1904 in Philadelphia, Mitchell & Ness designs and sells vintage jerseys and apparel collections for various major sports leagues. In February 2022, Fanatics acquired a 75% stake in Mitchell & Ness in a $250 million deal, with the remaining 25% owned by a group of celebrities and athletes including Jay-Z, LeBron James, Kevin Hart, and Kevin Durant.

The brand, which saw 30% annual growth in 2022 and generated $350 million in revenue, has secured several new rights deals since its acquisition by Fanatics. This includes a licensing deal with the NHL and an expanded headwear and throwback jersey catalog with MLB.

While Mitchell & Ness maintains its focus on heritage and nostalgia, Kumekpor aims to explore the intersection of sports, culture, lifestyle, and fashion. Drawing from his experience at Nike and Jordan Brand, he plans to expand the brand’s partnerships and explore opportunities with active rosters and players.

Kumekpor, who previously worked in the healthcare industry, also intends to incorporate cutting-edge innovation into the brand’s designs, taking inspiration from Jordan Brand’s popular sneakers. He aims to maintain the brand’s premium image while appealing to different consumer groups.
