Missouri Attorney General Files Lawsuit Against Health Provider Over Accusations of Neglecting Mental Assessments Prior to Sex Reassignments

Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey recently filed a lawsuit against a healthcare company for providing puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones to minors without conducting a mental health assessment, as required by state law prior to the ban on sex reassignments.

The Save Adolescents from Experimentation (SAFE) Act, which became law in Missouri on August 28, prohibits gender-changing treatments for minors.

Following the passing of the law, Attorney General Bailey’s office issued a letter to healthcare providers in Missouri, instructing them to immediately cease experimental treatments.

The recipients of the letter included Washington University in St. Louis, Children’s Mercy in Kansas City, Planned Parenthood in Great Plains and St. Louis, AIDS Project of the Ozarks in Springfield, and Southampton Healthcare in St. Louis.

The letter emphasized the ban imposed by the SAFE Act on puberty blockers and similar treatments for new patients, with penalties including revocation of medical licenses for non-compliance.

Three weeks after the letter was sent, the Attorney General’s office filed a lawsuit against Southampton Healthcare for allegedly providing gender transition interventions to minors without conducting comprehensive mental health assessments, as mandated by state law prior to the enforcement of the SAFE Act.
