Mississippi Police Officer Fired After 10-Year-Old is Detained for Public Urination

In Senatobia, Mississippi, a police officer involved in the arrest and detention of a 10-year-old child who urinated in a parking lot no longer works for the department, according to Police Chief Richard Chandler. Other officers involved in the incident will also face disciplinary action, although the specifics were not provided. Chandler acknowledged the violation of proper training on how to handle children and expressed gratitude for the public’s patience during the investigation.

The child’s mother reported that her son urinated behind her vehicle while she was at a lawyer’s office on August 10th. Officers then placed the child in a squad car and brought him to the police station. However, Chandler clarified that the child was not handcuffed or charged but instead received a citation for being in need of services. It is unclear whether that citation has been rescinded as of Tuesday.

Senatobia, home to approximately 8,100 residents, is located about 40 miles (64 kilometers) south of Memphis, Tennessee.
