Mission: Impossible Franchise Achieves Unprecedented Opening Success

Following a highly anticipated promotional campaign led by Tom Cruise, the latest installment in the Mission: Impossible franchise, titled Dead Reckoning Part One, achieved an impressive $80 million in global box office earnings over five days. However, the film fell slightly short of industry predictions by accumulating $56.2 million over the three-day weekend alone, according to estimates provided by the studio. Nonetheless, the movie’s debut was bolstered by strong international sales of $155 million across 70 markets. Despite this, Dead Reckoning did not match the astounding success of last summer’s blockbuster, Top Gun: Maverick, which opened with $124 million.

The seventh film in the long-running Mission: Impossible series, which spans 27 years, was initially projected to surpass the previous installment, Fallout, which earned $61 million domestically upon its release in 2018. However, Dead Reckoning fell short of both the franchise high and the $57.8 million debut of Mission: Impossible II in 2000. Nevertheless, the film has been widely praised as a standout entry in the franchise, receiving rave reviews from critics (earning a 96% freshness rating on Rotten Tomatoes) and strong audience approval (reflected by an “A” CinemaScore). No other major release challenged the dominance of “Mission: Impossible” over the weekend. Last week’s top performer, Insidious: The Red Door, dropped to third place with a $13 million gross in its second weekend. Meanwhile, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny experienced a rapid decline, earning $12 million in its third weekend, bringing its total domestic earnings so far to $145.4 million.

Below are the estimated ticket sales from Friday to Sunday at theaters in the United States and Canada, according to Comscore. Final figures will be released on Monday.

  1. Mission: Impossible—Dead Reckoning Part One – $56.2 million
  2. Sound of Freedom – $27 million
  3. Insidious: The Red Door – $13 million
  4. Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny – $12 million

  7. Transformers: Rise of the Beasts – $3.4 million
  8. No Hard Feelings – $3.3 million

  10. The Little Mermaid – $2.4 million
