Missing Titanic Submersible Prompts Search for Military Sub-Hunting Aircraft

A tourist submersible exploring the Titanic has gone missing in a remote part of the Atlantic Ocean.

Canada has deployed a CP-140 Aurora to aid in the search efforts.

The Aurora is an advanced long-range aircraft capable of hunting submarines and conducting maritime surveillance.

A multinational, time-sensitive operation has been launched to locate a missing submersible that was exploring the wreckage of the Titanic. To aid in the search for the tourist submersible, named Titan, Canada has deployed CP-140 Aurora aircraft. The vessel has been missing since Sunday, when all communication was lost in a remote part of the northeast Atlantic Ocean.

Lieutenant Commander Hickey, a Canadian military public affairs officer at the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC), stated that there is a continuous presence of Aurora aircraft above the search area, with multiple planes rotating to refuel. The JRCC has announced that the Aurora will provide continuous support with additional aircrews and assets, offering surface and sub-surface acoustic detection capabilities.

The US Coast Guard, earlier on Tuesday, mistakenly identified the CP-140 Aurora as a P-3 Orion. The Aurora is a Lockheed Martin product and is a long-range aircraft utilized for various missions, including anti-submarine warfare, maritime intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, search and rescue, strike coordination, and operations management, according to the Canadian government. The Aurora is comparable to the P-3 Orion, which was previously utilized by the US Navy.

Rear Admiral John Mauger, commander of the Boston-based First Coast Guard District, initially stated that a Canadian P-8 Poseidon aircraft was involved in the search for the missing Titan submersible. However, Lieutenant Commander Hickey clarified that this was a mistake, as Canada does not currently possess a P-8 Poseidon in its fleet. Nevertheless, the Coast Guard has deployed a C-130 aircraft to conduct a visual and radar search of the scene.

Sabrina Singh, the Pentagon’s deputy spokesperson, announced on Tuesday that the US military is aiding in the search operations. She mentioned that by the end of the day, the US will have committed three C-130 aircraft to search and rescue flights. The Navy is working closely with the Coast Guard to provide personnel and assets promptly. The search and rescue efforts are being coordinated by a unified command consisting of the Coast Guard, Navy, Canada, and the company that owns the submersible.

The Titan, operated by OceanGate Expeditions, embarked on an eight-day mission to explore the Titanic’s wreckage approximately 400 miles off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada. However, communication was lost less than two hours into the journey. A comprehensive rescue effort is underway to locate the Titan, which has approximately 40 hours of breathing air remaining. The Coast Guard has deployed two research vessels, the Polar Prince and Deep Energy, to search the surface. The current search area covers about 7,600 square miles, larger than the state of Connecticut.
