Miss Italy Prohibits Transgender Women from Participating in Pageant

  • The organizer of the Miss Italy pageant has stated that contestants must be assigned female at birth.
  • This announcement follows the recent crowning of a transgender woman as Miss Netherlands.
  • Patrizia Mirigliani, the official patron of Miss Italy, criticized the inclusion of transgender contestants in other beauty pageants, considering it “a bit absurd.”

A representative of the Miss Italy beauty pageant has declared that contestants must be assigned female at birth. This announcement comes shortly after Rikkie Kollé made history as the first transgender woman to be crowned Miss Netherlands.

Patrizia Mirigliani, the official patron of Miss Italy, expressed her disagreement with the inclusion of transgender contestants in beauty pageants, referring to it as “a bit absurd,” according to Italian outlet Il Primato Nazionale.

Mirigliani has been involved with Miss Italy since the 1980s, following in the footsteps of her father, Enzo Mirigliani, who led the pageant from 1959.

“Recently, beauty pageants have been attracting attention by embracing strategies that I find somewhat ludicrous,” Mirigliani stated. “From its inception, my competition has specifically required contestants to be assigned female at birth.”

“Perhaps because even back then, it was anticipated that beauty could be altered, or that women could undergo transformations, or that men could transition to women,” she added.

Insider reached out to representatives of the Miss Italy pageant for comment but did not receive an immediate response.

Mirigliani’s stance on transgender contestants comes after Rikkie Kollé made headlines as the first transgender woman to be crowned Miss Netherlands. Kollé will represent the Netherlands in the 72nd Miss Universe competition, to be held in El Salvador later this year.

Kollé and Miss Netherlands announced the victory on social media, sharing a photo of Kollé being crowned by the current Miss Universe, R’Bonney Gabriel.

The caption of the image stated that 22-year-old Kollé excelled throughout the competition and made significant progress. Kollé expressed pride in showing the transgender community that their dreams can be achieved.

“Yes, I am a transgender woman, and I am happy to share my story. But I am also Rikkie,” Kollé added. “I accomplished this through my own strength and enjoyed every moment.”

Kollé will be the second transgender person to compete in a Miss Universe competition, following Angela Ponce’s representation of Spain in the 2018 international pageant.
