A frightening incident occurred during the Home Run Derby, but thankfully, it ended on a positive note.
During Monday’s Home Run Derby, a young outfielder was struck in the head by a powerful 116 mph hit from Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
The identity of the boy has not been disclosed, but he was able to walk out of the left field bullpen with a large bandage and ice on his head, receiving cheers from the fans.
Despite the impact of the hit, the young boy received immediate on-site treatment at Seattle’s T-Mobile Park and was well enough to attend the All-Star Game on Tuesday, as reported by TMZ.
Guerrero went on to win the Derby, defeating Randy Arozarena from the Rays in the final with a score of 25-23.
This incident is not the first time a ball-shagger has been injured during the Home Run Derby.
In the 2021 contest, a ball-shagger was struck by a line drive from Pete Alonso and required assistance to leave the field.
The ball-shaggers at the Home Run Derby vary in age, with many of them still in high school.
Although the news is positive for the young boy, concerns have been raised about the safety of having kids attempt to catch fly balls hit by professional athletes.
