An Iowa woman had her dream of creating a unique necklace using giraffe poop from Kenya shattered when customs officials seized the feces at a Minnesota airport on September 29. According to CBS News, during the inspection, the woman, who had previously made jewelry from moose feces, confessed to having giraffe droppings and her plan to use them for her creative endeavor. Sadly, the officials confiscated and destroyed the poop using steam sterilization. Thankfully, since the woman declared the unusual item instead of attempting to smuggle it, she will not face any punishment, as reported by ABC News.


Despite the fact that bringing ruminant animal droppings into the US is permitted with the appropriate permits and inspections, which this woman did not have, there are significant dangers associated with introducing fecal matter from other countries. According to a statement from CBP’s Chicago field director, “There is a real danger with bringing fecal matter into the US. If this person had entered the US and had not declared these items, there is a high possibility that a person could have contracted a disease from this jewelry and developed serious health issues.” Kenya is known to have diseases such as African swine fever, classical swine fever, Newcastle disease, foot and mouth disease, and swine vesicular disease.
