Millie Bright vents frustration over VAR absence as Lionesses fall prey to offside opener | England’s Women’s Football Team

England’s captain, Millie Bright, expressed astonishment at the absence of VAR in the Nations League games. This came after England’s 2-1 defeat against the Netherlands, where the Dutch team’s opener, scored by Daniëlle van de Donk, was clearly an offside.

Bright stated, “It is mind-blowing that we do not have VAR in competitive international games. This is international football, and yet there is no consistency in the use of technology.”

Stanway added, “She was practically next to Mary [Earps, England’s goalkeeper]. People watching at home could instantly see what happened on TV. We could see it on the big screen as soon as they scored. So why couldn’t the referee look up and see it too? But she made her decision, and we have to play on. We were unlucky toward the end of the game where we needed better game management.”

The manager, Sarina Wiegman, echoed her players’ sentiments. She said, “I thought the build-up to the goal was unnecessary, but it was blatantly offside. I believe everyone in the stadium thought it was offside, so I’m really disappointed. VAR would have ruled out that goal. We need consistency with VAR – either have it or don’t.”

Bright acknowledged that the lack of VAR could not be used as an excuse for England’s defeat. Defensive errors leading up to the offside goal and the Netherlands’ 89th-minute winner were to blame.

She remarked, “We put ourselves in that position by failing to clear the ball and handle pressure. These incorrect decisions make a huge difference in games. As players, we need to keep talking about it and demand better.”
