China has apprehended an individual working for a military industrial group on suspicion of espionage for the CIA, according to Chinese national security authorities. This development adds to the already tense accusations of spying between Beijing and Washington.
The Ministry of State Security, the civilian spy agency of China, released a statement stating that a worker named Zeng had been supplying military secrets to the CIA in exchange for substantial amounts of money. Zeng, a 52-year-old employee who had been sent to Italy by his employer for a study program, allegedly encountered a U.S. embassy official who turned out to be a CIA agent.
The ministry’s statement posted on its WeChat social media page mentioned that Zeng gradually developed a psychological reliance on the U.S. official, who capitalized on this vulnerability to indoctrinate him with Western values. The U.S. official purportedly promised Zeng a significant sum of money and assistance in facilitating his family’s emigration to the United States in exchange for sensitive information about China’s military, which Zeng had access to through his job.
Upon completing his overseas studies, Zeng returned to China and continued to have secret meetings with CIA agents, providing a substantial amount of crucial intelligence and gathering funds for espionage.
The ministry confirmed that the suspect has been detained and that further investigations are underway. The CIA has chosen not to comment on these allegations.
CIA Director William Burns has publicly acknowledged the agency’s efforts to enhance its intelligence collection capabilities in China, emphasizing the importance of a strong human intelligence capability alongside other methods of information acquisition.
China’s announcement of this case is the latest in a series of public accusations of espionage between the two countries. Recently, the U.S. arrested two U.S. Navy sailors on charges of leaking military secrets to China. Tensions between China and the U.S. have reached a low point following the U.S.’s shooting down of a suspected Chinese spy balloon that had entered U.S. territory earlier this year.
