Mike Tyson Praises Jake Paul as His ‘Hero,’ Acknowledges His Contributions to Boxing’s Revival

  • Netflix has recently premiered the highly anticipated documentary “Untold: Jake Paul the Problem Child.”
  • Within the documentary, boxing legend Mike Tyson expresses his admiration for Jake Paul, going as far as calling him his “hero” for his contributions to the sport.
  • This is not the first time Tyson has acknowledged Paul’s impact in saving boxing.

One of the most legendary and feared boxers of all time has acknowledged the role of a YouTuber in revitalizing the sport of boxing.

Netflix has released the newest addition to its “Untold” documentary series, titled “Untold: Jake Paul the Problem Child.” The documentary delves into Jake Paul’s journey from a YouTube influencer to a professional boxer.

Despite criticism from figures like UFC President Dana White, who view Paul as a mere attention seeker, Mike Tyson, an iconic boxer, only has admiration for Paul.

“He has done more for boxing than some of the champions,” Tyson asserts during an interview for the documentary. “I admire those who can draw a crowd to the arena. Those are the individuals I respect.”

“You’re entertaining us. You’re the champ. You’re my hero,” Tyson continues.

Tyson further emphasizes the importance of embracing Paul in the boxing community, as he believes Paul has the potential to “save boxing” through his continued participation in the sport.

This isn’t the first time Tyson has commended Paul.

During a press conference in 2020 for Tyson’s exhibition fight against Roy Jones Jr, Tyson credited Paul for injecting life into the sport of boxing.

“Now we have these YouTubers with 20 million subscribers?” Tyson mentioned, referring to Paul. “Boxing is making a comeback thanks to these YouTube boxers.”

But Paul’s impact extends beyond generating publicity and selling tickets and pay-per-views. He has also shed light on the issue of pay for boxers and MMA fighters, as demonstrated by his criticism of Dana White. In addition, Paul is actively involved in establishing a fighters’ union.

In the Netflix documentary, Tyson explains why he admires Paul.

“I enjoy seeing him talk trash,” Tyson comments on Paul’s self-promotion tactics. “The blonde-haired, blue-eyed cute kid is becoming fierce. ‘Fuck you! You can’t fight, you piece of shit. You’re nothing.’ That’s art. It attracts attention.”

Tyson even states that he can relate to Paul since both individuals are often misunderstood as villains.

“Jake Paul is not a villain,” Tyson clarifies. “He is an antihero. He is not a villain. He performs heroic acts, but he does not conform to traditional hero standards.”

Despite criticism from some who view Paul as an inauthentic boxer, having the support of one of boxing’s biggest names speaks volumes.
