Mike Pence Attempts to Influence Trump on Enacting a Nationwide Abortion Ban

Mike Pence, the former Vice President, made a bold challenge to his fellow 2024 GOP presidential candidates on the eve of the Supreme Court’s ruling that overturned reproductive rights. Speaking at the Faith and Freedom Coalition conference, Pence urged his party members to support a federal ban on abortion nationwide, emphasizing that it would benefit the Republican Party politically.

Pence indirectly referenced his former boss, Donald Trump, who attributed the GOP’s underperformance in the 2022 midterm elections to the abortion issue. While Trump played a crucial role in appointing three Supreme Court justices who helped repeal Roe v. Wade, he has been hesitant to endorse a federal ban on abortion, stating in interviews that he believes it is not a winning issue.

However, Pence asserted that the cause of life is the defining issue of our time and called for the restoration of the sanctity of life in American law across all states. He urged every Republican candidate for president to support a ban on abortion before 15 weeks as a minimum nationwide standard.

Although several 2024 GOP candidates echoed Pence’s support for a 15-week federal ban, they also acknowledged the political challenges of passing such a measure. Asa Hutchinson, former Governor of Arkansas, stated that while he would sign a bill with reasonable exceptions, he doubted that congressional action would be possible due to the divided nature of Congress.

Polls have consistently shown that abortion is a divisive issue for Republicans, particularly among independent voters. A survey conducted by the Public Religion Research Institute revealed that a majority of people in the states won by Trump in 2020 support legal abortion in most or all cases.

Moreover, polls indicate that GOP primary voters prioritize a candidate’s position on the economy over culture war topics like abortion and transgender rights. According to a CBS News/YouGov poll, only 58% of GOP primary voters consider it important for a presidential candidate to support a national abortion ban.

Despite Trump’s relatively muted stance on a national abortion ban, his popularity among GOP primary voters remains strong. Many of his rivals in the 2024 race have focused their campaigns on praising his administration.

Overall, Pence’s challenge to his fellow GOP candidates reflects his commitment to the pro-life cause. While the political feasibility of a federal ban on abortion remains uncertain, Pence believes that taking a firm stance on this issue is crucial for candidates who align with Christian values and prioritize following God’s leadership.
