Attorneys representing conspiracy theorist Mike Lindell and his company MyPillow in defamation lawsuits brought by Dominion Voting Systems and Smartmatic have requested to withdraw from both cases due to Lindell’s accumulating unpaid legal fees.

In court filings, Minnesota-based Parker Daniels Kibort stated that Lindell and MyPillow have failed to pay the firm for their work on the case and will be unable to pay future fees and costs.

“On October 2, 2023, [the law firm] was informed by Defendants that they are not able to get caught up with or make any payment on the large amount they owe in arrears nor pay for anywhere near the estimated expense of continuing to defend against the lawsuits going forward, including either the legal fees or litigation costs,” the filing stated.

In an interview with CNN on Thursday, Lindell acknowledged that he hasn’t paid the attorneys for the last two or three months and expressed uncertainty about who would represent him in the case. However, Lindell adamantly stated that he would not settle with Dominion or Smartmatic, the election technology companies suing him for defamation.

“Not in a million years,” he said.

Dominion, the election technology company that has been the subject of debunked right-wing conspiracy theories about voting fraud in the 2020 election, filed a $1.3 billion lawsuit against MyPillow and Lindell in 2021 for his repeated allegations that Dominion rigged its machines to favor Joe Biden over Donald Trump.

Smartmatic similarly sued Lindell for defamation, claiming that he lied about the company’s role in the 2020 election for personal financial gain.

MyPillow, a prolific advertiser on the right-wing cable channel Fox News, which also promoted the false election conspiracy theories, has suffered significant financial losses since Dominion’s lawsuit. This has led to the company’s inability to pay their legal fees, according to Lindell’s statement to CNN.

Lindell and MyPillow have been notified of their attorneys’ intention to withdraw, and they have stated that they will not oppose the move. The court filing demonstrates their understanding of the need to withdraw due to the lack of funds.

The court must grant the attorneys’ motion to withdraw before formally releasing Lindell and MyPillow as clients.

Dominion’s attorneys did not provide a position regarding the motion in the court filing. Additionally, Dominion and Smartmatic have not yet responded to CNN’s request for comment.

During an appearance on Steve Bannon’s “War Room” program, Lindell attributed his financial troubles to “attacks on MyPillow” that have severely impacted the company’s credit.

“I can’t pay the lawyers. We can’t pay. There’s no money left to pay them,” he lamented. “I don’t know where that leaves us.”
